Where to Stay Near Back of the Dragon (Hotels, Cabins & Lodging Guide)

Finding the right lodging near Back of the Dragon isn’t just about booking a place to sleep; it directly affects how you experience the ride. Whether you’re staying in Tazewell near the start of VA-16 or setting up in Marion for a quieter base, where you stay shapes how you ride, how often you ride, and how much of the area you actually explore.

Lodging near Back of the Dragon includes hotels, cabins, and mountain stays along Virginia Route 16 between Tazewell and Marion, offering riders and drivers direct access to one of the most technical and scenic roads in Southwest Virginia.

Why Where You Stay Matters on Back of the Dragon

Back of the Dragon isn’t a one-and-done ride.
Most riders don’t really understand the road until their second or third pass. The first run is about learning the rhythm. The second is where you start to anticipate the curves. That’s why staying close to VA-16 matters.
If you’re in Tazewell, you’re minutes from the climb out of town, where the road immediately starts tightening. Early mornings here, especially before the sun fully hits the shaded sections, give you cooler pavement and cleaner runs.
From Marion, the ride builds more gradually. You’ll ease into wider sections before it tightens heading north, which makes it a smoother start if you’re still getting a feel for the road.
Where you stay determines whether you get one rushed ride or multiple runs that actually let you learn it.

Best Areas to Stay Near Back of the Dragon

Tazewell, VA

Tazewell is the center of everything.

Most riders stay close to Main Street and the areas surrounding the Back of the Dragon Welcome Center. From here, you’re within minutes of VA-16, and you don’t have to deal with long back-road approaches before getting into the ride.

You’ll also find rider-friendly spots like The Dragon’s Den Restaurant and lodging options that accommodate bikes, trailers, and groups.

Staying here means:

  • Quick access to the route
  • Easy fuel and food stops nearby
  • More riders around, especially on weekends

Marion, VA (Southern Access & Quieter Stay)

Marion gives you more space and a slower pace.

Areas near Hungry Mother Highway and the outskirts toward Hungry Mother State Park offer quieter lodging with quick access back to VA-16. You’re still close enough to the route, but without the same level of rider traffic as Tazewell.

This side works well if you want:

  • A less crowded base
  • Easy access to outdoor areas
  • A smoother entry into the ride before it tightens

Types of Lodging Near Back of the Dragon

Hotels Near Back of the Dragon

Hotels in Tazewell and Marion are the most practical setup for most riders.
In Tazewell, staying near town keeps you close to fuel stations, restaurants, and direct access to VA-16. In Marion, hotels along main access roads make it easy to get in and out without navigating tight side streets.
They’re a good choice if you:

  • Need reliable parking
  • Are you traveling with a group
  • Want everything within a short ride

H3: Cabins Near Back of the Dragon

Cabins around Tazewell and along the edges of the Jefferson National Forest give you a different experience.
These are often set along smaller mountain roads just off VA-16, where elevation changes are noticeable. Mornings here are cooler, and depending on the season, you’ll deal with light fog in shaded areas before the sun burns it off.
Cabins are best if you:

  • Want privacy and quiet after riding
  • Are you staying multiple nights
  • Don’t mind being slightly outside town

They feel less like a stop, and more like you’re part of the landscape you’re riding through.

H3: Lodges & Scenic Mountain Stays

Lodges sit just outside the main town areas, often along ridgelines or forest edges.
You’ll get:

  • Views of the surrounding mountains
  • More open space than in-town hotels
  • Easy access back to VA-16 without being right in the middle of town

They’re a solid option if you want both comfort and a strong sense of place.

How to Choose the Right Place to Stay

Proximity to VA-16

Not all “nearby” lodging is equal.
Some places listed as being close to Back of the Dragon can still require a 20–30 minute ride on narrow local roads before you even reach VA-16. Staying near Tazewell or directly off main access routes keeps you within minutes of the ride.

Ride Style & Trip Length

How you ride should decide where you stay.

  • Short trip → Stay in Tazewell for immediate access
  • Weekend trip → Choose between Tazewell (ride-focused) or Marion (balanced)
  • Multi-day trip → Cabins or scenic stays give you more flexibility

The more time you spend here, the more your lodging choice matters.

Parking, Trailers & Rider Needs

This is one of the biggest factors, and it’s often overlooked.
A lot of riders trailer their bikes in, especially for weekend trips. That means you need:

  • Open parking areas
  • Easy entry and exit (no tight turns or steep driveways)
  • Space to unload and move around

Places that look fine online can become a problem if access is tight, so this is worth checking ahead of time.

Recommended Stays for Riders (Experience-Based)

The best places to stay near Back of the Dragon aren’t just about amenities; they’re about how easy it is to ride.
In Tazewell, look for lodging near the route start or just outside town where you can get on VA-16 quickly without dealing with traffic or complicated turns.
In Marion, focus on areas near Hungry Mother Highway or just outside town where you can balance ride access with a quieter environment.
The goal is simple: less time getting to the road, more time riding it.

Plan Your Trip

Where you stay is what turns a ride into a trip.

The right setup gives you the flexibility to ride early, adjust your pace, and come back for another run without feeling rushed.

Plan your trip, choose your base in Tazewell or Marion, and give yourself enough time to ride it more than once; that’s when the road really starts to open up.
